Build the bowl around balance

A pet pig's daily diet should be based on appropriate nutrition rather than internet trends. Commercial diets formulated for miniature pet pigs can provide a useful foundation, while fresh water, suitable vegetables and supervised foraging add variety. Exact quantities depend on an individual pig's age, condition and needs.

The phrase “feed less to keep them tiny” is a warning sign, not a care tip. Deliberate underfeeding does not create a genetically smaller pig; it creates an animal at risk of poor health. Seek a qualified veterinarian's advice if you are uncertain about weight or body condition.

Think in categories

Foundation: a nutritionally appropriate feed recommended for your pig and fresh water available all day.

Variety: suitable vegetables and fibre sources introduced thoughtfully. Different animals tolerate foods differently; check individual needs with your veterinary team.

Rewards: small food treats for positive training, counted as part of the overall intake rather than offered without limit.

Avoid: chocolate, caffeinated products, excessive salt, spoiled food and inappropriate dog or cat diets.

Make meals interesting

Rooting and sniffing are meaningful activities. Scatter a small portion of a measured meal in a safe, supervised location, offer a suitable puzzle feeder or turn feeding into a brief target-training session. Avoid toys with breakable pieces or materials that can be swallowed.

Notice changes early

A change in appetite deserves attention, especially when accompanied by altered movement, pain, weakness or unusual behaviour. Do not treat a sudden refusal of food as a training issue. Contact a veterinarian when something seems significantly different from your pig's normal routine.

Food is only one part of wellbeing. Exercise, rest, companionship, suitable space and preventive healthcare all matter. A thoughtful feeding plan fits naturally into that bigger picture.
